About Us

The Western Photographic Society was founded in 1979 by a small group of amateur photographers and is still going from strength to strength. We are affiliated to the Photographic Alliance of Great Britain through the Lancashire and Cheshire Photographic Union, and are aided by the Isle of Man Arts Council.

We are a sociable and frendly society of about 40 members and enjoy a wide range of photography related activities including digital slide shows, talks, demonstrations and competitions each season, which is from late September to early May. We also enter competitions between ourselves and other photographic clubs both on and off the Island. Our meetings are held on Thursday evenings starting at 7.30pm in the Legion Club, Douglas Street, Peel (see programme page for details.   During the summer break we have a variety of social outings.

There is a serious side to the competitions, but the main emphasis at our meetings is to enjoy the evenings event and each others company in a friendly and often jovial atmosphere. New members are made very welcome and soon make friends. We are also pleased to welcome non members to any of our meetings, so if you are interested in photography please come along and see us. Naturally we hope you will wish to return on a regular basis and become a member. There is no obligation for members to enter competitions, and you don't need to be a good photographer to join us. Our members have a wide range of abilities from beginner to expert and use film, digital or both. Whatever your level there is lots to learn, and help and advice on photographic problems is available on club nights.
