Main Street Uvalde

At the Crossroads of America, Texas, and Your Heart

OUR VISION:

Main Street Uvalde envisions a revitalized and active historic downtown destination that strives to be pedestrian-friendly, attractive, safe and desirable center for business, leisure and entertainment incorporating and celebrating the unique history, architecture and cultural diversity of the community.

Projects — Main Street Uvalde

The Uvalde Main Street Program and the Uvalde Convention and Visitors Bureau are seeking to improve the image of downtown Uvalde and its Main Street District by stimulating Historic Preservation through the assistance of funds, and to help encourage restoration of historic storefront facades located within the designated Main Street District. The Uvalde Main Street Façade Improvement Grant Program is set up to reimburse property owners, and in some cases tenants, after work is completed. Grant funds are matched 50/50 against private reinvestment.  The program is offering a total of $9,000 in grants for 2019. Maximum possible payout for an individual grant is $5,000.  Grant applications ranging from $50 to $5,000 are available for paint-only projects, signage & awning projects, façade rehabilitations or full restoration projects. (Note: This program is designed to help a range of different needs, and applicants are eligible for only one grant per 12 month period.) Funds will be focused on exterior façade work on storefronts and commercial buildings that immediately overlook public streets in the Uvalde Main Street District and are distributed on a per building/business basis but will consider all work on a case by case basis. For more information and or grant applications stop by our office today.

Imagine Your Business Here — Main Street Uvalde

On May 1st 2017 the Texas Historical Commission launched DowntownTx.org. In May 2018, Uvalde was chosen to participate in the program.  They will be adding additional communities in the future.  The database currently offers detailed information about buildings, homes and properties, zoned for commercial use,  located within the boundaries of Uvalde’s historic district also known as “Old Town Encina”.  To find properties that are for sale and for lease in our downtown area, please visit www.DowntownTX.org.

If you are interested in showcasing an available property online at DowntownTx.org,  drop by our office at 300 E Main St. Uvalde or email us at mainstreet@visituvalde.com. The property must be located within the boundaries of the Uvalde Historic District.

Wood Windows and Canopies — Main Street Uvalde

When adding or repairing a canopy on your building, it is recommend that you avoid the use of corrugated metal with a squared off profile.  The appearance is not historically correct, gives the impression of inferior quality, and lacks visual appeal.

The underside of the canopy can be exposed or solid.  Wood bead board can be used to cover the canopy structure. Recessed lights can then be placed to illuminate the sidewalk.

Historically,  sheet metal canopies were rolled and had a curved appearance.  Flat metal sheets were connected by a standing seam.  Decorative pressed metal tiles were less common on the exterior of a building, but often used inside.

4 Point Approach — Main Street Uvalde

The program is part of the Texas Main Street Program run by the Texas Historical Commission. Uvalde was dedicated as a Texas Main Street City in 2011.

The Main Street Four-Point Approach to downtown revitalization within the context of historic preservation has been successful in more than 1,200 towns and cities across the country.  These four points include:

  • Organization – builds partnerships among the various groups that have a stake in downtown; builds a pathway to leadership in local efforts by launching community-based, volunteer-driven nonprofit entities that empower residents and investors to collaborate for sustainable revitalization.
  • Promotion – promotes a positive image of downtown to a variety of audiences; focuses on authentic community assets, with high-quality image development campaigns and events that will attract new shoppers, visitors and residents
  • Design – focuses on the physical elements of downtown such as storefronts, signs, landscaping and public spaces; targets infrastructure and building improvements that lay the groundwork for a physical transformation that will be both functional and attractive.
  • Economic Restructuring – identifies new market opportunities for the downtown area; redefines the district’s niche in the marketplace and sharpens the competitiveness of existing businesses, while nurturing new enterprises that respond to today’s consumers’ needs.

What We Do — Main Street Uvalde

The City of Uvalde Main Street program combines historic preservation with economic development to restore prosperity and vitality to downtown and neighborhood business districts. The Main Street concepts involves a Four-Point approach, as follows:

ORGANIZATION

This involves getting everyone working toward the same goal and assembling the appropriate human and financial resources to implement a Main Street revitalization program.

PROMOTION

Sells a positive image of the commercial district and encourages consumers and investors to live, work, shop, play and invest in the Main Street district. By marketing a district’s unique characteristics to residents, investors, business owners, and visitors, an effective promotional strategy forges a positive image through advertising, retail promotional activity, special events, and marketing campaigns carried out by local volunteers. These activities improve consumer and investor confidence in the district and encourage commercial activity and investment in the area.

DESIGN

Brings Main Street into top physical shape. Capitalizing on its best assets — such as historic buildings and pedestrian-oriented streets — is just part of the story.

ECONOMIC RESTRUCTURING

Strengthens the community’s existing economic assets while expanding and diversifying its economic base. The Main Street program helps sharpen the competitiveness of existing business owners and recruits compatible new businesses and new economic uses to build a commercial district that responds to today’s consumers’ needs. Converting unused or underused commercial space into economically productive property also helps boost the profitability of the district.

The four points of the Main Street approach correspond with the four forces of real estate value, which are social, political, physical, and economic.

Design Resources — Main Street Uvalde

A focus on design supports a community’s transformation by enhancing the physical elements of downtown while capitalizing on the unique assets that set the commercial district apart.  Main Streets enhance their appeal to residents and visitors alike with attention to public space through the creation of pedestrian friendly streets, inclusion of public art in unexpected areas, visual merchandising, adaptive reuse of older and historic buildings, more efficiently-designed buildings, transit oriented development, and much more.
